faces in the alley

A few Saturdays ago, I took a stroll through the alleys south of Queen St. West in Toronto. I try to find street art in every city, and Toronto has some compelling alleys- virtual galleries of artwork showing a wide range of expression and styles. This time through, I related to the faces and characters, so I have named this tour Faces in the Alley. I hope you enjoy walking where I did. With my thanks to the talented street artists who created this world of characters...

Continue the tour here.

For weeks now we have only been able to fleetingly fix on la Femme as she steals through the night shadows creeping with the cats in the dark allies (and the dark allies of her soul?) where others have aggressively expressed in spray with a repressed but necessary force. Here are gang tags – the signature of violent spirit stoked by a disenchanted culture – along with faces of ardor, passion, rage, abandon, rebellion, and beauty in a rampage of form and line and color.

“La Femme, which of these faces is yours?”

“They are all mine j. Life is creative only if it destructive. The new requires the end of the old.”

That;s a gorgeous stairway. I should keep my eyes out for this in Vancouver. In fact, there is a beautiful mural of jazz legends painted on a building a block away from me. I guess sometimes when you see something everyday, you forget to really SEE it....

I live quite close to these alleys (in the scheme of things). Are you aware that there's a street festival every summer to highlight the street art? K
