la dolce dita

Now this is what you wear to a book launch...

When it comes to demonstrating exquisite personal style, Dita von Teese can do no wrong- every gown she dons is a gorgeous suprise. This Zac Posen maxi is no exception- the overall look is very gothic Scarlett O'Hara.

Update: read an interview from Dita's book launch here.

une question pour vous

Inspired by yesterday's post on Says the Asian Leprechaun, I have a frivolous question for all you fashionable blog readers- just what do you carry in your handbags?

Update: If you want to see what French girls carry around in their bags every day, there is a blog devotedly entirely to this topic. Merci lady for the link!

french revue

I am completely blown away by the stunning images Thierry le Goues has shot for French #8 Revue des Modes. The full portfolio can be salivated over here. Merci fashionologie for the link!

the devil has a twin

Continuing on with the subject of twins, this artist at Berlin's Biennial bears a striking resemblance to US Vogue's Anna Wintour- just funkier and German.

Reasons to want a twin...

Their outfits look even better x2. More candids of fashion coordinated twins taken by Watanabe Ani can be found here.

lovely liv

Most gorgeous woman on earth (Liv Tyler) at the premiere of her new film Lonesome Jim. I love the Marc Jacobs goddess/tulip dress. And to top it off, she is wearing my dream Louboutins.

conversations with my mother

If you've read my profile page, you may remember that my mother ('mutti') is a midwife- she has great personal style but doesn't care about fashion. At all. Thankfully, she appreciates beautiful clothing and is resigned to the fact that I spend a large percentage of my earnings on expensive apparel, but every so often we have a conversation that goes like this:

"Do you want me to get you a pair of those shoes from Wal Mart while I'm in the States?"

"What?"

"The shoes I got last time- they were only $7.99. I'm going to get a few more pairs for work"

"Um, no thanks"

(Pokes head out of bathroom- has lime green underwear wrapped around her hairline keeping her red curls back while she applies makeup)

"Don't be a snob- you wore my shoes to work the other day"

"That was an emergency situation and will never be repeated in this life"

"Anyway, the label says White Stag, not Wal Mart, and they are really comfortable"

"Mutti, they are $8 flat plastic shoes- please stop or I will eat your head"

scarlet trappings

Apparently, the red bows on Kim's fabulous tweed jacket are made from old invitations- that is some very fashionable recycling (although, who receives invitations with bows? I guess the parties I go to aren't so posh!). The result looks to me like DIY Roland Mouret/Yves St. Laurent. Picture from Alternative Fashion Week 2006 in London.

let them eat cake!

The April issue of Paris Vogue has a behind-the-scenes glimpse of Sofia Coppola's highly stylized Marie Antoinette (the trailer can be viewed here). I'm slightly obsessed with historical costumes, so the abundance of corsets and panniers is drawing me like Carrie to Manolos. See the rest of the French article here.

I love the 18th century ladies gabbing on their cells and smoking:

how do I love thee ebay...

let me count the ways. After months of searching (I first wrote about them back in October), I finally found these lace up miu miu boots on ebay in an IT 41. They arrived brand new last week in a slightly battered tan box, and I've barely taken them off since. Boots are my only real vice- better than drugs or alcohol I suppose- but similarly effective. They have provided a much appreciated [4"] lift in a hectic week. See them on the runway here.

Even my neighbour's cat was envious:

lolo's jo'burg

Contemporary street fashion from Jo'burg (Johannesburg) as captured by South African photographer Nontsikelelo "Lolo" Veleko can currently be seen in an exhibit called Snap Judgements in New York. This shot is my favourite- Nonkululeko's red tights, white wedges and coca cola purse are so great. The NY Times has a write-up of the exhibit here.

noir totale

When it comes to style, Parisians. Just. Do It. Better. I know this is repeated ad nauseum among the fashion set, but the French reputation for fabulous street style is not undeserved- I wasn't convinced until I went to Paris and saw regular women prancing effortlessly around the cobblestone streets in 4 inch stilletoes and functional, ultra chic ensembles. These candids are from Fashion Week, and appeared in today's NY Times.

N.B. Looks like black leggings/tights with heels or booties are definitely à la mode for spring...

natalia et nieva

April's Paris Vogue features the gorgeously pregnant Natalia Vodianova. She is due to give birth to daughter Nieva any day, but take away the bump, and Natalia looks catwalk ready (and is due to shoot the Calvin Klein campaign in 3 weeks!). I love the icy palette used in this spread.

sacré bleu!

Blogger has been down all day for filer maintenance. Très annoying- see you as soon as the "access forbidden" screen on La Femme's laptop goes away! Adieu!

16.3.06

could it be true?

There are rumours that Phoebe Philo (ex-creative director for Chloé) could be the new "heir apparent" to Chanel. I can't think of a better person to succeed Lagerfeld (except of course, Roland Mouret)...

i never wear tights but...

that is truly a great pair. For the full perhaps-not-safe-for-work-unless-you-are-in-Amsterdam shot, go here. Number 4.

la maîtresse

Oh, how I love The Daily... they managed to get a moment with one of my style icons- stunning actress Kristin Scott Thomas- at the YSL fall /06 show (if you don't know who she is, then run, don't walk to the video store and rent Four Weddings and a Funeral or Gosford Park)...

What do you think of the pink? [Looking around] It’s pretty. It’s actually quite pretty I must say.
(pink to which they are alluding →)

Tell us about your current projects…
I’ve just wrapped a film called The Walker with Woody Allen and Paul Schneider.

Excellent! What role do you play?
I’m a politician’s wife.

Aha. Do you think YSL would have been suitable for your character to wear in the film?
I don’t think in this particular case. It’d have to be a politician’s wife with taste, which doesn’t exist.

Touché!

Hmm... unfortunately short, but you don't hear from her often, so it's good enough for me.

aujourd'hui en paris...

Irina is walking around in fabulous red booties. Personally, I've never been into flat boots- there has to be some heel for me to be interested- and it seems like whenever I see flat boots on the street, they are scrunched down around the ankles of a girl shadowing Sienna Miller c. 2004. Très boring. However, I love how Irina has paired hers with black tights, skirt and light check coat. It's all about the contrasts. Although, when you are a model, I guess everything looks good on you! Irina is from the same geographical location as La Femme- I swear a passion for funky boots runs in the water up here.

cyber mannequins

If you were ever a fan of cut-out paper dolls, or computer game The Sims, you will probably like H&M's new online dressing room feature. Certain items from the H&M spring line can be tried out on personalized virtual models- all of whom, bizarrely, have blonde hair... perhaps becaue the brand is Swedish? I think it's an interesting feature, but "creating yourself" online is a little weird to me (click on pic to enlarge). Have fun.

copycat!

An observant blog reader just brought to my attention that ebay seller 'kandyfloss13' directly copied my entry about the Jimmy Choo Ramona bag into their ebay listing without crediting La Femme for the content. Allô kandyfloss! Get your own creative writing juices flowing- and some online etiquette while you're at it!

golden moderne

The Dada by YSL is looking to be very popular with the well heeled lot this spring. Inspired by Dada movement artists, this shoe has been popping up all over since its debut. Stefano Pilati has a knack for creating covetables- I'm still searching for one of the famous square buckle belts that got everyone waisted last fall.

hyperrealism in heels

Marilyn Minter juxtaposes grit with glamour to create images that can be considered grotesque or compelling to the viewer. I had heard that three of her pieces would be displayed as billboards around NY, but hadn't imagined what they would look like towering above the street. Striking, is the answer, although I think that the scattered chaos of this Chelsea street detracts from the details in the image. The rest can be found here.

and the award for best dress goes to...

Michelle Williams in tangerine Vera Wang. According to the Oscar fashion poll results, she was best dressed actress of the night, in this bright 30's style gown. Michelle certainly stood out in the sea of black and white arrivals. Thank god someone was brave enough to shy away from the safe colours. Thanks for voting!

the duchess of hats

It's no big news that Kate Moss topped Tatler's list of best dressed Brits again, but I was pleasantly surprised to see Camilla Parker-Bowles at no. 10. It's all about those Phillip Treacy hats- her collection must rival the Queen's.

fur coats and python pumps...

two of Carine's favourites. From this mini feature on Carine Roitfield's outfits during Paris Fashion Week, I have learned that:

1. The supremely chic editor of Paris Vogue doesn't mind wearing the same shoes every day- (she's just like us!) albeit, during fashion week she switched between Helmut Lang pumps for days 1 & 2 and python Pradas for the rest- slightly more exotic choices than most...

2. She is given ready-to-wear before it is featured on the runway!

notorious bettie paige

I hadn't heard of 1950s pin up Bettie Paige prior to seeing this image on the cover of a film magazine last year, but flipping through March's W, I came across a picture of a model in similar gear, and she reminded me of Ms. Paige. I love it when women style themselves in a way that defies the expectations of their era, which is definitely what she did. Gretchen Mol (left) portrays the infamous fetish model in The Notorious Bettie Paige, which is to be released in April. More Bettie here.

dah, dah, dah!

My dream car happens to be a red Saab, and after seeing Elie Saab's fall collection (which was inspired by Imperial Russia, hence the title), my dream dress is too. At least today.

His collection included some of the most gorgeous outfits I have ever seen- in particular, the ones involving black velvet, whether in the body of the dress, or as trim- had my jaw on the ground. Don't get me started on the lacy romantic white blouses. Oh my god.

My only criticism is that the models badly need some makeup and a hairdresser.

8.3.06

qu'est-ce qu'il y a dans votre poche?

I noticed dresses with pockets on the runways (particularly at Narciso Rodriguez and Chanel), and now that I've seen 3 actresses resting their hands in the pockets of their Oscar gowns, I'm trying to decide what I think of the look... I strongly believe that fashion should be functional- at least on a daily basis- perhaps the Academy Awards are an exception... so I don't hate the look, but I don't love it either... Any opinions?

The ever stunning Anna Mouglalis evidently approves...

dovima & cate

Richard Avedon's Dovima with the Elephants is one of my favourite fashion images of all time, and I love how it has been reinterpreted with Cate Blanchett for the March issue of Harpers Bazaar UK. Dovima is wearing 1955 Dior- I don't know who created Cate's gown but it is making me hyperventilate. So beautiful.

alas, alack...

The Miu Miu fall collection was a disappointment. I'm a die hard Miu Miu fan, and with all the hype over the ultra-exclusive location (Laperouse restaurant) and guest list (Vogue received only 3 invitations- mon dieu!), and Miuccia's words about the event being "special and important", I was hoping for a stunning Parisian debut. However, with the exception of a few dresses and black jackets, the clothing was a perverse mix of shapeless coats, lampshade skirts and rough fur. Oh well, I'll cross my fingers for next year.

Miuccia, this is a fall collection right?

7.3.06

the devil wears patchouli

I've been peeking inside Anna Wintour's "Chekhovian retreat" in the Hamptons, and must say that the shabby chic interior of a "tumbledown hippie house" (to quote Ms. Wintour directly) is not at all what I had in mind. However, I wasn't as surprised by that as the sappy accompanying article- here is an excerpt from World of Interiors magazine:

"they set off together down a long narrow dirt road, through the woods"?? Anna Wintour?

5.3.06

see spot run

OK, I've said this before but today's NY Times reminded me how much I want a 3/4 length leopard print coat. The spotted boots are overdoing it a bit I think...

femme cyborg

Gemma's alien-doll looks usually don't appeal to me, however they are perfectly suited to this slightly disturbing futuristic shoot photographed by Mario Sorrenti for the March issue of Paris Vogue. Gemma reminds me here of the cyborgs from Star Trek and the Terminator movies- I've always found those indestructible, partially armoured creatures compelling, and am impressed with these images...

Look at those spidery hands...

eminence rouge

Sonia Rykiel, the WWD crowned Queen of Knitwear is one of my favourite designers of all time- she is like a Parisienne version of Vivienne Westwood (red hair included). I've been coveting one of her trademark stripy pullover sweaters for years, however, knitwear aside, I'm more in love with the accessories from her fall/06 collection than the clothing.

The fab booties at left look similar to the MJ ones I posted about earlier. I love the Victorian style strap and button closure on both shoes...

This knitted sling bag is so perfect for spring- I love how the rose embellishments, in combination with the noir colour make it feminine but not girly (note the model is wearing black gloves- this is Parisian chic, NOT boho chic!).

The best part though, was the overall look of the models. Everything from their voluminous hair, soft makeup, smiles, and the roses that were tucked all over contributed to a sexy and sweet appearance with a hint of Parisian slyness (this is Sonia Rykiel after all...)
