well booted travelling garden gnome

The femme is in South England for a couple of days. There is a lot more in the way of scones and rabbits around here than fashion, but I am taking a quick break between leaving the Canadian North and arriving in Paris. Experience has taught me that taking a little time to acclimatise between the two destinations is beneficial... the last time I flew direct to Paris, I nearly passed out from suddenly being in an atmosphere full of people who looked like they had just emerged from the pages of Vogue. Women were actually wearing stilletoes, while men actually carried handbags. After Toronto, where schlumpy tends to be the name of the style game, it was too overwhelmingly exciting to bear. I remember stepping out of my hotel in the St. Germain district, my jaw dropping as I took everyone in, and my mutti saying "yes, giraffe, these are your people".

Alors.... Tuesday will find me prostrated in front of the altar of Colette (don't worry, I'll go exploring off the beaten fashion track too...) Thanks for your patience while updates are scarce- if you have sent me your address, a postcard from Paris will find its way to you soon.

Bisous. A (my miu mius send their love too).

I love feeling like you're coming home in a foreign city. You're such an expat.

oh, i love this post. : ) i'm so happy you're there, even the bunnies and scones are a welcome change to the daily droll.

mm. scones. i spent a month studying ("reading!") at cambridge a few years ago and came back a whole new size thanks to flaky, buttery, soft, raisin scones slathered in raspberry jam...ah, i salivate at the thought of them! hm. odd, but true.

have fun. i miss england, too.

"I nearly passed out from suddenly being in an atmosphere full of people who looked like they had just emerged from the pages of Vogue." I love that line!! It is so true. Ahh.. a place where you can feel right at home in beautiful clothes. Since I moved back to Seattle-- I refuse to dress like a local. Last night at the wine bar, the staff surrounded me and questioned my wearing of a shawl-- as if that was sooo unique-- it was quite funny/strange....
Travel Well!!!

I must confess a pang of, not quite jealousy, but regret at hearing about your travel plans and those another blogger who frequents Paris.

For me August has always been the month of the bonus trip. The obligatory trip, the I've-got-to-get-out-of-this-country trip comes in May, and in its glory days lasted a solid month. These days it's down to two weeks max, and this year I missed it altogether. But then after a summer of hot, hard work, I would try to leave time and money in the kitty for a week's travel before settling down for the serious business of autumn. The first trip could have adventure: new places, sometimes physical exertions. But the second trip was always to a well-loved spot, some place where I could indulge: Paris, London, Florence/Venice/Ferrara (grouped together for personal reasons), even to the glorious, elegant, geriatric Salzburg Festival a few times. I'm missing that trip this year too.

But, no, I'm not jealous. Not at all. I will live vicariously through my friends, and will wait impatiently each day, make a daily pilgrimage to the mailbox for my postcard from Paris.

Cheers,

BB

I feel really stupid now! I've been so busy those last few weeks I didn't read your blog carefully enough: I would have been so happy to meet you in Paris! Maybe you wouldnot have had the time to meet up anyway. Another time maybe... I hope you enjoyed your trip.
