exquisite accident

To me, this is a perfect candid photograph that captures the elusive, carefree element of summer. Beyond the lovely printed bias cut dress (I'm always looking for those on ebay...), look at how the heel of her right shoe meets her shadow. I love that this couple -snapped in 1930 by the invisible friend whose shadow you can see in the foreground- is playing around on the beach in California, but they are still dressed to the nines. Check out his spats!

Things were so much classier back then; you could understand the lyrics of songs that weren't being screamed or rapped, just going out to the theatre was a chance to dress up, skincare was just a bar of soap and a jar of moisturiser...

I love this photo and I love that dress - photos like this are exactly why i love vintage - they have a history that carries forward - the vintage dress you buy was once worn by some hopeful, bright young woman full of dreams.

I have a dress almost exactly like that! It was my graduation dress (U of Georgia) almost ten years ago, and I still pull it out from time to time. Timeless.

The trouble with it, however, is that the bias cut has allowed the dress to stretch. It almost touches the floor now, and was originally tea length. I don't know anything about sewing or alterations: can this be fixed?

That is a wonderful photo...

Hmmm...interesting.
I like this photo too, but the "photo shrinks" might say this guy is her lap dog. The lack of face-to-face contact? And she's obliterating his identity with her elbow in his face. I think she left this guy in the dust and moved on to greener pastures. The shadow-shoe detail IS wonderful as is the shadow shape of the two of them no matter how unconnected they are. I LOVE the quite ominous shadow of the picture-taker in the lower right corner. He's the one she ran off with IMO...

Interesting shot and great shadow shapes all around. I think she ran off with the picture-taker in the lower right hand corner, even if he is a bit portly..maybe he's the Sugar Daddy here IMO
